Program Overview

GGG program combines organized team soccer with well-designed leadership curriculum from the Women’s Sport Foundation that focuses explicitly on developing leadership skills, increasing self-esteem, and promoting healthy lifestyles.

Program Structure

The program consists of reading/dialogue and soccer practice sessions for two (out-of-school) hours three times a week, with specific hours determined by our partners. Most Fridays we will bring together GGG participants from various sites for cross-cultural exchange soccer games.

For the 45-minute/one hour reading/dialogue sessions at the start of each session, trained adult Team Leaders use the structured curriculum and materials to work with these girls to develop leadership skills, increase self-esteem, and promote healthy lifestyles – guiding, empowering, and helping these talented girls become empowered, confident, and healthy leaders.

GGG sessions are led by paid college-age women who serve as role models, mentors, and coaches. These Team Leaders and the participants are supported by high school girls who volunteer as assistant team leaders, some of whom are program “graduates.” They receive training further support from our Executive Director. We mark the end of each session with an all-program event to celebrate accomplishments and reinforce friendships that cross cultures, neighborhoods, ages, languages, and customs.

Demographic of Participant

Program participants ranged in age and cultural backgrounds, consistent with MNTP’s mission that focuses on urban and immigrant youth and youth of color. Although participation rates varied among the sites and over the course of the program, over 450 youth have been impact since 2002, the starting year of the GoGirlGo program. For the past two years, GGG program has served the following demographic:
